Most people have a desire to be recognised for performing well at their job.  Although not always guaranteed, performing well should lead to praise, improved remuneration and/or a promotion.

If career progression is important to you, it is advisable that you get clarification from your employer as to what you need to do/deliver to have a promotion opportunity presented to you.

Career Planning

It is important that you take time to think about your career, so you reach the place you want your career to be. Knowing where you want to get to is first priority, we can then work with you to formulate a plan to help you achieve your goal.

Some simple guidelines to help you plan:

• Assess your current job and its prospects: this may raise issues or reassure you that you are in the right place.
• Think about your career, this shows your employer that you really take your career seriously; any points/issues you highlight gives you a conversation subject to discuss when you are next appraised.
• Make sure that you have clarity on your career direction and the paths that you could take to achieve your goal. If changes occur with your employer, you can react quickly, as you are clear on the impact on your job/career goal.
• Make sure you are able to objectively assess different opportunities as they arise, both internal and external and compare them to your career goal.
• Flexibility is key, as there may be jobs/tasks that are not quite what you want to do, but these jobs/tasks will give you the necessary experience to achieve your end goal.
• A good plan will leave several options open, but eliminate the possibility of you ending up in the wrong place. Your plan may be adapted, modified or otherwise altered over time to suit your changing career needs, but you still need a plan.
• Review the plan regularly. Job markets change fast; you need to manage your career on an ongoing basis. A very good practice to follow is to undertake an annual career review, along with a briefer six monthly reassessment of your strategy.
