Commercial managers are senior members of and in some cases have overall responsibility for a business's commercial department. They almost always come from a background as a quantity surveyor and possess considerable experience working on specific sector projects such as water, rail or residential.

Commercial managers will often be responsible for quantity surveyors who will work under them and will have management and administrative duties in addition to their commercial responsibility for cost and contract management.

The principle duties of a commercial manager include:

• Negotiating contracts and costs
• Monitoring budget and time requirements through the project
• Providing the client with financial reports
• Monitoring building regulations to ensure standards are followed
• Excellent organisational skills
• Providing management and guidance to quantity surveyors within the department
• Working with senior management to ensure the commercial function within the business is being fulfilled in line with the policies and goals of the business

A commercial manager should have:

• A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
• Many years experience as a quantity surveyor or previous experience as a commercial manager
• Excellent IT and mathematical skills
• Good attention to detail
