In building services, design engineers are responsible for the design of linked and independent electrical or mechanical installations within the internal environment of a building such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and power supply.

They typically become involved in a project once the structural design has been agreed and it is not unusual for a main contractor to have been appointed and the groundwork stage to have begun before a design engineer will be brought in.

Building services design engineers play an important role in determining the energy requirements and environmental impact of a building and work closely with architects and structural engineers to minimise these.

The principal duties of a design engineer include:

• Reviewing structural designs and conducting site surveys
• Performing feasibility studies
• Producing and developing concepts through to detailed design
• Production of high quality project documentation
• Developing control system strategies.
• Production of Technical reports as required

A design engineer should have:

• A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
