In building services, mechanical design engineers are responsible for the design of linked and independent mechanical installations within the internal environment of a building such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

They typically become involved in a project once the structural design has been agreed and it is not unusual for a main contractor to have been appointed and the groundwork stage to have begun before a design engineer will be brought in.

Building services mechanical design engineers play an important role in determining the energy requirements and environmental impact of a building and work closely with architects and structural engineers to minimise these.

The principal duties of a mechanical design engineer include:

Reviewing structural designs and conducting site surveys
Performing feasibility studies
Producing and developing concepts through to detailed design
Production of high quality project documentation
Developing control system strategies.
Production of Technical reports as required

A mechanical design engineer should have:

A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
Excellent IT and mathematical skills including specialised software skills
Good attention to detail
Strong analytical and reasoning skills
Strong communication skills
