Planners, planning engineers or schedulers are responsible for the creation, development and maintenance of project plans and schedules. These detail the activities involved in a project, the methods and resources that should be employed to complete them and the sequence and timing in which they should be carried out.

The principal duties of a planner include, but are not limited to:

• Creating a tender plan in the relevant software using estimates from the preconstruction team
• Creating a project plan from first principles using a work breakdown structure and the relevant software ie: Primavera, MS Project, Asta Powerproject
• Working with engineers and project managers to monitor any change and ensuring that the programme remains updated
• Performing critical path evaluations and earned value analysis
• Holding update meetings with clients and contractors to ensure that relevant teams are kept up to date of changes to the programme

A planner should have:

• Engineering background within the relevant industry
• Excellent IT skills
• Good attention to detail
• Proficient in the relevant planning software e.g. Primavera, Asta
• Good communication skills
• The ability to work well within a team and on their own initiative
