Planners, planning engineers or schedulers are responsible for the creation, development and maintenance of project plans and schedules. These detail the activities involved in a project, the methods and resources that should be employed to complete them and the sequence and timing in which they should be carried out.

The planning manager or director will typicaly be senior members of or have overall responsibility for a planning department. In addition to having administrative and managerial responsibility they will work closely with other senior managers to ensure the planning department works in accordance with company policies and goals.

Depending on the size of the organisation for which they work, a planning manager or director may still be involved in day to day planning activities or may spend 100% of their time on managerial activities.

The principal duties of a planning manager or director include, but are not limited to:

• Core planning activities such as the creation and maintenance of work programmes
• Managing, supporting and developing more junior members of the planning department
• Holding meetings with and preparing reports for senior management and company directors

A planning manager or director should have:

• Engineering background within the relevant industry
• Excellent IT skills
• Good attention to detail
• Proficient in the relevant planning software e.g. Primavera, Asta
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Strong leadership and management skills along with good time management and organisation
