Tips to advance your career

Are you looking for some tips on how to get the best out of your career? Or do you feel you are stuck in a rut and need some advice on how to advance? If so, then this is the article for you!

There are many things you can do to help with career progression. But we have picked, what we believe, are the four most important things you can do.

Network

Networking can be a very effective way to help you progress in your career. Not just externally but internally as well. If people know you, you are more likely to be talked about when new opportunities come up or exciting projects are set to start. If you work in a large company you may not get face-time with everyone all the time, so make the most of office socials and business events. We also suggest that you connect with anyone you work with on LinkedIn, as LinkedIn is a brilliant way to stay in touch and stay up to date.

You know the saying “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”? Well it’s true, so start getting to know the people around you and building out a strong network of contacts.

Be a pleasure to work with

This is absolutely crucial if you want to continue to advance your career. If you want to progress within you business it’s important that the people around you like working with you and for you. People who go the extra mile, have passion for their role and regularly deliver great work often get recognised, which will only help your reputation and your career opportunities moving forwards.

Always look to improve

By always improving you will always be learning, which will help you on your journey to becoming an expert in your field and develop new skills and strengthen existing skills. Be the best you can be and never rest on your laurels. Look into courses, read books and ask questions. No-one is perfect, technologies and ideas are always changing, so you should never stop learning!

Make a move

Not every company will be able to offer you continuous career progression opportunities. This could be based on the size of the company or even structure of the business. So if you feel you have gone as far as you can in your current company and there really is no more room for progression, maybe it’s time for you to make a move and look for a new opportunity elsewhere.
