One of the most important things you can do before an interview is researching the company you are interviewing with. This may sound like an obvious thing to say, but there are candidates who don’t so this, or if they do they don’t do enough digging. Doing your research about the company will help you prove your enthusiasm in the interview and will also help to show that you are a serious contender for the role.
In this article we look at where you can look for information and what information is important to look for. It won’t take you long but it will definitely increase the chances of you getting the role…
Who is interviewing you?
Most people like to know who they’re meeting before they actually meet someone, and it shouldn’t be any different when it comes to an interview. It’s up to you how much research you do on the person, but the least you should do is check them out on LinkedIn. Look at their position in the company and their role.
Knowing a bit about the person who is interviewing you is important as it can help you with what questions to ask during the interview. It can also help you to make a judgement on if you like them when interviewing, so if they are going to be your direct report then it’s important that you can see yourself working with this person.
LinkedIn is always a good place to research other employees of the company you are interviewing for. You may know someone who you could contact to let them know that you are interviewing for their company… you never know, they may even put in a good word for you!
It’s a good place to see who your potential colleagues would be, find out their experience and background before joining the business and to see how they progressed within the business since joining. It’s always a positive to see promotions on their profiles, as it shows that their are opportunities within the business.
An obvious place to go, but that’s what a website is for, to offer information on the company. We suggest you take a look at their mission, values, culture, projects, sectors they work in and the size of the business as a minimum. This will give you some good background knowledge on the company, which will help when the interviewer asks you what you know about them, so be prepared!
Ask your Recruitment Consultant
If you have worked with a recruitment agency for your job search the first point of call should be the Recruitment Consultant who got the interview for you. They will know a lot more than just what their website can offer. They will also know the person you are interviewing with and they will be able to give you some good info and tips on how to interact with them and get the best out of the interview. So make sure you pick their brains!
